A review of Wonder, by R.J. Palacio
In between the business of life, the last few days I have had the pleasure of reading the Palacio’s debut novel. I have not seen the movie based on the book; I’m not sure I want to because all 70,000 plus words are so precious.
I tend to believe that there are two sides to every story, but Palacio reminds me that every character has a story to tell. Most of the story is told by August, a 5th grader who has undergone 27 surgeries to repair deformities to his face. He is about to attend a traditional school for the first time, after being home schooled through 4th grade. Deformities is a harsh word, but it is the one August uses to describe his face. While, he tells most of this story, we also hear from his older sister, and both of their friends. And that’s where we see how hard it is to be a kid, even if you don’t have a deformed face. But we also share in the joy of childhood.
Read this book, you will enjoy the emotional ride!
Outstanding, couldn’t put it down
